  10. Looking and Seeing: Ethics, Aesthetics, and Wittgenstein's Political Thought.R. Shannon Duval - 1995 - Dissertation, The Pennsylvania State University
My dissertation is a study of the relationships among aesthetics, ethics and politics in the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. In this project I use primary texts, records of conversations, and correspondence to describe Wittgenstein's "moral perfectionism." I then consider what place there might be for political action within his conception of the good life. The aim of the dissertation is twofold. First, it is an analysis of Wittgenstein's ethical thought and the continuity it provides between his early and later work. (...)

Conservation Ethics and the Japanese Intellectual Tradition.David Edward Shaner & R. Shannon Duval - 1989 - Environmental Ethics 11 (3):197-214.
A systematic philosophy that presupposes an ecocentric world view, rather than a homocentric or egocentric world view, can be a viable resource for investigating issues in environmental philosophy and conservation ethics. Generally speaking, the Japanese philosophical and religious tradition represents a commitment to ecocentrism. This philosophical orientation is in concert with the world view of manynaturalists. We explore one example of ecocentrism by unveiling the crosscultural connection between the naturalistic philosophy of Louis Agassiz, a nineteenth-century French-American biologist, and the early (...)

    Experience and Expression. [REVIEW]R. Shannon Duval - 1994 - Review of Metaphysics 48 (1):165-166.
This work is a concise study of the central concepts in Wittgenstein's later philosophy of psychology. Schulte uses Wittgenstein's manuscripts from 1945-49 to illuminate central arguments and ideas more accessible through these manuscripts than through the published texts. Specifically Schulte is concerned with manuscripts 130-8 which deal with the logic of psychological concepts, the concepts of thinking, understanding, sensation, and perception, as well as with philosophical method, philosophical argumentation, and an analysis of conditional statements. Also included in the manuscripts are (...)

    Wittgenstein. [REVIEW]R. Shannon Duval - 1993 - Review of Metaphysics 47 (1):165-167.
In this excellent introductory study, Schulte provides a clear, concise account of Wittgenstein's life and works. Schulte captures the flavor of Wittgenstein's life: the passion and intensity, as well as the desire for solitude and loneliness which inform his writings. The first chapter presents a sensitive and thoughtful picture of Wittgenstein as a man who loved to make things. We suffer with Wittgenstein as he lives to see the suicides of three of his four brothers and contemplates suicide himself, and (...)

Heart rate variability (HRV) is an indicator of the regulation of the heart, see Task Force (Circulation 93(5):1043–1065, 1996). This study compares the regulation of the heart in two cases of healthy subjects within real life situations: Marathon runners and shift workers. After an update on the state of the art on HRV processing, we specify our probabilistic model: We choose modeling heartbeat series by locally stationary Gaussian process (Dahlhaus in Ann Stat 25, 1997). HRV is then processed by the (...)

Throughout the biological and biomedical sciences there is a growing need for, prescriptive ‘minimum information’ (MI) checklists specifying the key information to include when reporting experimental results are beginning to find favor with experimentalists, analysts, publishers and funders alike. Such checklists aim to ensure that methods, data, analyses and results are described to a level sufficient to support the unambiguous interpretation, sophisticated search, reanalysis and experimental corroboration and reuse of data sets, facilitating the extraction of maximum value from data sets (...)

Age-Related Differences in Early Cortical Representations of Target Speech Masked by Either Steady-State Noise or Competing Speech.Bruce A. Schneider, Cristina Rabaglia, Meital Avivi-Reich, Dena Krieger, Stephen R. Arnott & Claude Alain - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Word in noise identification is facilitated by acoustic differences between target and competing sounds and temporal separation between the onset of the masker and that of the target. Younger and older adults are able to take advantage of onset delay when the masker is dissimilar to the target word, but only younger adults are able to do so when the masker is similar. We examined the neural underpinning of this age difference using cortical evoked responses to words masked by either (...)

  36. Inner speech as a mediator of self-awareness, self-consciousness, and self-knowledge: An hypothesis.Alain Morin & James Everett - 1990 - New Ideas in Psychology 8 (3):337-56.
Little is known with regard to the precise cognitive tools the self uses in acquiring and processing information about itself. In this article, we underline the possibility that inner speech might just represent one such cognitive process. Duval and Wicklund’s theory of self-awareness and the selfconsciousness, and self-knowledge body of work that was inspired by it are reviewed, and the suggestion is put forward that inner speech parallels the state of self-awareness, is more frequently used among highly self-conscious persons, (...)

    On the quasi-ordering of borel linear orders under embeddability.Alain Louveau & Jean Saint-Raymond - 1990 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 55 (2):537-560.
We provide partial answers to the following problem: Is the class of Borel linear orders well-quasi-ordered under embeddability? We show that it is indeed the case for those Borel orders which are embeddable in R ω , with the lexicographic ordering. For Borel orders embeddable in R 2 , our proof works in ZFC, but it uses projective determinacy for Borel orders embeddable in some $\mathbf{R}^n, n , and hyperprojective determinacy for the general case.

The French school of theoretical biology has been mainly initiated in Poitiers during the sixties by scientists like J. Besson, G. Bouligand, P. Gavaudan, M. P. Schützenberger and R. Thom, launching many new research domains on the fractal dimension, the combinatorial properties of the genetic code and related amino-acids as well as on the genetic regulation of the biological processes. Presently, the biological science knows that RNA molecules are often involved in the regulation of complex genetic networks as effectors, e.g., (...)

Méthode et philosophie: la descendance éducative de l'Émile: Condorcet, Kant, Pestalozzi, Fichte, Herbart, Dilthey, Dewey, Freinet.Alain Trouvé & Michel Soëtard (eds.) - 2012 - Paris: L'Harmattan.

The article examines the surprising role of Rousseau in the revival of liberal and humanist thought in contemporary French political thought. The choice of Rousseau as an inspiration and source of humanism is an illuminating indication of a shift in French thought. The authors concentrate on the natural- rights republicanism of Luc Ferry and Alain Renaut and the critical humanism of Tzvetan Todorov. While these thinkers all appeal to Rousseau's definition of humanity in terms of freedom, they draw on (...)

Reconceptualizing Professional Development for Curriculum Leadership: Inspired by John Dewey and informed by Alain Badiou.James G. Henderson Kathleen R. Kesson - 2010 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 42 (2):213-229.
Almost a hundred years ago, John Dewey clarified the relationship between democracy and education. However, the enactment of a ‘deeply democratic’ educational practice has proven elusive throughout the ensuing century, overridden by managerial approaches to schooling young people and to the standardized, technical preparation and professional development of teachers and educational leaders. A powerful counter‐narrative to this ‘standardized management paradigm’ exists in the field of curriculum studies, but is largely ignored by mainstream approaches to the professional development of educators. This (...)
